# Pull Up Bar Café: A Day of Cooking and Connection in Manchester

## Celebrating Culture Through Food and Poetry

Last month, I had an incredible opportunity to make a difference in the lives of some of Manchester’s young people. Invited by Hide Out Youth Zone—a charity dedicated to supporting Manchester’s youth—I spent a day teaching local kids how to cook traditional dishes. It was a day filled with connection, laughter, and stories about everyone's heritage.

I taught the kids how to make delicious patties and chicken curry. This was my way of bringing a taste of my roots and my love of cooking into the community. Kids of all ages and backgrounds gathered around, learning the art of cooking. They connected with each other over food, sharing their own stories and experiences.

Breaking the Ice

One of my favourite ways to get to know people is by asking where they’re from and what their favourite foods and traditions are. This simple icebreaker helped everyone open up and find common ground. It was amazing to see how food can bring people together, creating bonds that transcend differences.

I wasn’t alone on this special day. I brought along Kofi, a talented poet who performs regularly at my café’s popular poetry nights. Kofi shared his passion for poetry and explained how it can be a powerful tool for self-expression. He helped the kids see that writing and poetry can be as therapeutic as cooking. This opened up a new way for them to express themselves and connect with others.

A Joyful Exchange

At one point, the kids surprised me by teaching me one of their songs. This created even more joy and laughter in the room. The day was a beautiful exchange of cultures, with everyone learning something new from one another. I left feeling deeply fulfilled, inspired by the kids' energy and excitement.

The Power of Community

At Pull Up Bar Café, I love creating a space where people can connect, share stories, and celebrate each other’s cultures. Whether through food, poetry, or just spending time together, I believe in the power of community. I can’t wait for the next opportunity to work with Hide Out Youth Zone again.

For me, it’s all about giving back—one meal and one poem at a time. I truly believe that experiences like these can help foster a sense of belonging and community spirit.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on that day, I am reminded of the importance of cultural exchange. It enriches our lives and strengthens our community. I look forward to more events that celebrate our diverse backgrounds and shared experiences.

If you’re interested in joining us for future events, keep an eye on our social media. We’ll be posting updates about upcoming cooking classes, poetry nights, and other community engagement activities.

Together, we can continue to build a vibrant cultural hub in Manchester. Let’s celebrate our differences and find joy in our shared love for food and creativity.
